Hello,
Thank you for sending your question to Just Answer!
Minature horses are a lot of fun to have, however they take the same care at large horses..they just don't eat as much!
Where do you plan on keeping the Horse or horses? If they have access to grass, see below.
Keep in mind that horses are herd animals and if at all possible, I would consider purchasing 2 as other than the original cost of the horse, it will not add that much to your yearly cost.
When you search to buy a Mini Horse, first there are "Show Quality" and "Pet Quality" which will be drastically different in cost. Unless you plan to show them, a "pet quality" Mini is a wonderful pet.
Hooves/Trimming: Most horses need their feet trimmed every 6-8 weeks. It differs from horse to horse depending on their feet and their enviroment. (Estimate cost: $20-$30 depending on your area. I would call a local Blacksmiths to get their prices.
Teeth Floating: This is usually required yearly. However, older horses or ones with teeth problems may need more often. (Again, I would call local vets that do floating for Minis for a price-you may be able to shop around, however not all vets work on minatures)
You may want to call a local Miniature Stables to find the vets that provide services for Minis.
You also have to plan on about $300 + - for vaccinations:
Coggins test
Spring Vacinnations (VEE, Rhino Flu/Rabies, etc)
West Nile
Strangles
Fall Vacs (WEE/Tetnus)
Minis need good quality "Coastal" (mixed grasses), but do not need much per day. A 1/4 flake is usually enough. Grass is good as well, but you need to be careful not to overfeed as they can "Founder". A low protein mixed grain or pellet (10%) fed twice a day. You will probably feed about 1/3 of a small coffee can. A bag of grain costs between $6.00 - $8.00.
I hope this helps. If you need further information feel free to contact me.
