Help- my poor black lab has so much trouble with his ears.
Sent to Pet Experts May 10 07:27 PM

Help- my poor black lab has so much trouble with his ears. He has been on meds on and off since birth. Right now, when he shakes his head white liquid splatters across his nose. (I think from his ears.) I have used Otomax and Mal-otic so many times. He's had shots of cortisone and anti-biotics. At one point, one vet said he had psuedomonas (sp?) in one ear, so we did ear washes and Mal-otic and went back for a check, and a different vet said he's ears were fine (he couldn't believe he actually had pseudomonas (or whatever) just use a cortisone cream and rub it around the inner ear opening. (That didn't help at all) I've tried peroxide and water 1/2 and half, tea tree oil and olive oil 10 drops per tsp, and he's worse than ever. Does anything really work?

Optional Information:
Age: 4; Male; Breed: Labrador retriever

Already Tried:
Oto max, mal-otic, peroxide/water, teatree oil/olive oil, other ear rinses, antibiotics, cortisone cream, steroid shots

Reply to Gina's Post: The ears don't smell so bad right now (in the past when the vet said they were infected, they smelled like old sneakers) He has always eaten Purina dog chow (started on Puppy chow, then Little Bites, now just the regular stuff)
He doesn't scratch at all (even his ears) just shakes them violently. No hair loss. I really appreciate your help. No offense, but I thought I was paying to speak to a vet, no?

Reply to Gina's Post: I guess the vets haven't really been able to help much so far anyway!! I would love to know if you're familiar with the problem (and I know it is a big problem with labs, but our female yellow, his mom, has never had a problem with her ears, so I'm even more frustrated)and if there really is a solution. If you think a vet could help more, you can forward me to them. I'm really desperate and not wanting to pay anymore multi-hundred dollar vet bills! I really do appreciate what you're doing!

I would be happy to explain what happend with my Jake. I got Jake at 3 weeks old and bottle feed that boy :) Once weaned onto puppy food he started with the ears. The vets chaulked it up to infections and treated as yours did...I think I went through GALLONS of the Otomax :) Finally, I found a holistic vet (it was a last plea so to speak) who asked me what I was feeding. I was feeding Puppy Chow...which is full of corn, as is what you are feeding your boy. He had an allergy to corn which was causing problems with his ears that included yeast infections. I treated Jake 1-2 times per week with a 50% white vinegar/water solution in the ears with a cotton ball and changed his food to a holistic blend. I finally found a food called Eagle Pack Holistic and he never had another ear, skin or any allergy related problem again. If you would like to read about Eagle Pack products, check out their website:

I feed Holistic Duck and Oatmeal flavor. :) Give it a shot..just remember it takes a good month to see results :)

Relist: I still need help.
Gina gave me some good advice, but she said she would forward my question to the vets. When I clicked "accept" to say I accepted her advice, my "deposit" posted to her, and I think I am out of the peocess now. Will my question still be forwarded to a vet? Thanks!
