Injured Rottwiller in pain

Sent to Pet Experts February 03, 2006 1:13 a.m.

Dear Dr.
I have a 110 lb, 5-yr old Rottwieller, who has somehow, ? gotten injured. The exact time, way or mannor is unknown.
But he first started showing signs of any problems was last Friday, Jan, 27, 2006 It was at night when he came inside for the night & tried to lay down suddenly he let out a sharp, shrill alf alf alf, like he was in excruciating pain. Needless to say we were distressed I've checked him over pretty throughly for any cuts, bites, broken bones etc. and found none that i could tell. However his rear rgt hind area felt as if there was a lump or swollen muscle. So i assummed he might somehow of sprained or pulled a muscle. But now after treating him at home w/ heating pad, rest, & asprin he is'nt improving any. He is'nt getting worse, "That I can Tell" but his pain and tenderness in and around his rear hind & underneathin the inside belly & groin area are extreamly tender & painfull to the touch for him. "***NOTE**** My dog is not in any way a whiney or sissy type . So I know he's really got somthing going on. When I took him in to the vets on Sunday Jan 29, In desperation, not able to afford a visit but hoping somthing could be worked out or at the very least to have a professional take a look to make sure there was no internal bleeding or such...... Upset & shaken I take him in only too be made to be looking the fool when once inside he acted as if nothing could be finer. Jumping, sniffing everything, excited & happy as alark to be there.. It made it hard to explain how hurt he really was & apperared to be a unnesscesary , Hypocondriactic action on my part. And I was told to take him home keep him inside & off his leg for a feww days & see is it gets any better. But it Hasn't ... I feel so terrible for him every time he moves a certain way or position and lets out the most painful sounding cry.. But I just dont have the funds to have x-rays @ $250.00 a pop plus ofc visit cost in the event that he does have only, although painfull just a pulled muscle/???   What can I do for him at home & other then cking the color of his gums, what signs should I be watching for as tell tell signs of real trouble.
Not unfeeling, Just broke....

Thank you for any help or assistance,
                                         &nbs p;                 Sincereley,

ACCEPTED Check Mark

It sounds like he may have hurt his spine somehow or have hip arthritis that is impinging on the nerves down into the painful area.
You can take his temperature rectally to see if its normal 101-102 F is normal in dogs.
Tick carried diseases can cause muscle and joint pain.
Its fairly common that in a stress situation like a vet hospital a dog would not show pain.
If you have any way to video what your dog is doing so the vet can see it that might work.
If your dog is overweight thinning him down some might help.
I don't see any way of diagnosing the real issue without testing including x-ray of hip and spine and maybe bloodwork to check for tick diseases. www.carecredit.com might let you finance the vet bill so you could pay it off in small amounts.
I think you are doing excellent first aid. The only other thing that might be worth considering is seeing a holistic vet for accupuncture or possibly chiropracty

Hope this helps you!
