Question

possible kidney disease

Sent to Pet Experts October 24, 2005 6:03 p.m.

My three year old female mutt was put in the hospital two and a half weeks ago because she was limping, lethargic, and her blood work came back showing kidney failure. They flushed her kidneys with IV fluids. A quick blood test before her release showed the BUN and creatine (spelling?) to be in the normal range. They put her on antibiotics and on Hill's food for canines with kidney disease. They rechecked her this past week, and her BUN and creatine (?) are still fine. She is still showing a little blood in the urine and protein in the urine. The protein in her body though is low along with magnesium and calcium. They say her urine is concentrated which is good. Urine also has crystals in it. She is playful and acting normal and has been ever since they flushed her kidneys and put her on the antibiotic. They are stumped. We are now waiting on yet another urine test that will tell the ratio of protein to creatine. If this comes back bad, I am definitely taking her to a specialist and getting a kidney ultrasound done. Do you have any suggestions or ideas as to what this might be? Is my dog going to be alright?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

The crystals may be an indication there is still infection or it might be a hereditary kidney stone/crystals problem requiring a special diet.
Getting the crystals analyzed to find out what kind they are may provide a clue as to your next steps.
You can read up on stones and crystals here
www.marvistavet.com/html/bladder_stones.html
including one problem seen in dalmatians especially.
You might want to check for tick carried diseases as they can cause kidney issues too.
And if the dog is partly shar pei for example there is a problem called renal amyloidosis which can lead to renal problems. You can read about effected breeds here and what the disease is about too
http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/Diseases/urogenital%20disorders/familial%20renal%20disease.htm
If you can get kidney function back working properly then the prognosis is good. If the kidneys fail in some areas you can find vets who do kidney transplants but its expensive.
Hope this helps you!
