(Not a Pet Question?)

vision

Sent to Pet Experts July 06 11:53 AM

I have a litter of five week old mixed breed puppies. They are healthy and active and will be going to responsible homes. But the runt seems as though she may have a vision problem. Her eyes are blue whereas the others are brown/blue brown. I have place my fingers close to her eyes but she doesn't blink. I don't find she follows my finger even when I have an object in it. She gets around just fine, interacts with her litter mates, runs to me when its feeding time and has not problem getting around in the exercise pen. I called my vet and he said he does not have the equipment to tell me if this pup has a vision problem but our closet vet college would.
Are there any tests that you are aware of that I could do at home to further test this pup?

Thank you for your time.

For home testing there is another thing you can do.
In a room or space the pup is familar with take some chairs with legs (kitchen or dining room type chairs) and set them up around the room and call the puppy. See if the pup can make its way through the obstacles without bumping them.
Blue eyes do not indicate blindness unless you are seeing blue in the center of the eye in the pupil area or the cornea appears opaque instead of clear.
Blind puppies can do fine in life and you can see some tips here

I do suggest seeing a veterinary opthamologist as finding out what is wrong before placing it seems to me to be the responsible thing to do in case there are more repercussions to the eye color than you realize.
Hope this helps you!
