For AKC your dog has to be over 7 months of age to be used as a stud dog and register the litter.
Responsible breeders make sure all health testing to ensure no hereditary illnesses will be passed to pups are completed before breeding.
Typical testing would include
CERF Screening for eye problems (Canine Eye Research Foundation)
Patellar Luxation Test for knee issues OFA (Orthopedic Foundation of America)
Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency and anemia problem(genetic test) which you can read about here

You also want both dogs to be proven free of brucellosis. Your vet can do most of that testing. But you'd need a board certified veterinary opthamologist to do the eye certification.
It is strongly advised that you use a stud contract if you are breeding to someone else's dog. Without the agreement in writing many owners of first time studs find they don't get a puppy back or a payment at all.
