I have an American bulldog mix. She is about 65 pounds and is a faun color....my vet said that if she were human she'd be a blond. He lips and often the inside of her ears turn a very bright red as does the tissue just under her nose. She scratches at one side of her mouth...the lower lip...sometimes like it itches very badly. It has become very red, swollen and inflamed. Sometime she scratches so hard it bleeds a little. The tissues on the lower side of her mouth (left side) are full of folds and when swollen even more "folded."   At present I am treating her with an antibotic and some veterinary creams and sprays. I am concerned that it is either a serious allergy or (God forbid) cancer. My vet sees her regulary but I'm worried. What should I do?

Optional Information:
Age: 4; Female; Breed: American bulldog

If it is allergy related then she should respond to Benadryl at a dosage rate of 0.5 to 1mg per pound of body weight every 12 hours and see if this helps with the itching. If so this can surely be related to a severe allergy and they should treat her with some Prednisone instead of an antibiotic, although the antibiotic will help to prevent any infection. If she is being seen regularly then they would see abnormalities in her bloodwork that could relate to cancer. I would also highly recommend a skin scraping which can help to diagnose whether this is allergy or infection related as well.
