Sent to Pet Experts April 23, 2006 12:45 p.m.

My shih tzu has is scratching hers skin since she was a puppy, she is now 1 year old.
I think she is allergic to something, I believe it starts with her paws and that way she is spreading it. Ofcourse with these problems her fur does not look good either. Her food is the best one available. I've tried special vitamins for her skin and coat too.
and to let you know I brush every day!

Question; can I use children benadryl on her? My Vet gave her chlorpheniranine, but
it changes her personality and it doesn't do that much.

Do you have any other suggestions? What can I do to help her?
Thank you so much for your time and efforts
Hope to hear from you soon

Respectfully,
Antoinette

Look at the ingredients list on the bag and can to see what else besides lamb and rice is in there.
This site lets you compare foods and I saw chicken, beef, and egg in the Nutro foods.
http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=comp-wiz
You may want to try a food that has no beef or chicken in it such as California Natural Lamb or Wellness or Eagle rabbit, fish, duck, or venison formulas to see if she does better on those.
You might also ask your vet for a referral to a veterinary dermatologist for expert help in figuring out just what the problem is.
You can use Benadryl at a dose of 1mg per pound of dog but it needs to be plain Benadryl not a cold formula. Tablets are better than liquids usually as some liquids have alchohol in them.
Hope this helps you!

Like I've told you she is only eating lamb and rice that's it. and yes I know I can go to a dermatologist What I am trying to do is figuring it out myself because it must be something simple
what she is allergic too

If she is eating Nutro its not just lamb and rice in their foods. Yes the label says lamb and rice formula in big letters but that isn't the only thing in the food. Reading the ingredients list will show you that.
I gave you some simple ways of handling the possible problem at home - change her food to a diet that is less filled with allergens than Nutro is. Some dogs do fine on Nutro and some don't - she may be one that does not.
She could also have an inhalant allergy, be eating treats that she is allergic to, have a thyroid problem causing the skin issues etc.
