Question

I am having a problem with the skin on my Collie and I ...

Sent to Pet Experts April 23, 2006 12:17 p.m.

I am having a problem with the skin on my Collie and I don't know where else to go for help.
He is a Male White & Sable AKG registered Collie (7) years old. Up until about 3 months ago, we haven't had any problems at all. We had him Professionally groomed every 6 weeks and the groomer always said his coat & skin were very good. About 2 days or so after his grooming (3 months ago), he started "nibbling" when we pet him. At first we thought it was an affectionate reaction but later notices sores and flaking skin.

We took him to a vet and the vet didn't know what it was but gave us an antibiotic to spray on the spots and antibiotic pills. The sores improved but the flaking of skin is persistent. We bathe him every couple weeks in a coal-tar remedy we bought at a pet store that helps for a week or so but it continues to flake.

Do you have any ideas or know who we can contact that might be able to help?
He is such a beautiful collie and we would really like to solve this mystery..

Thank you.

This might be an allergy or it might be a thyroid problem causing skin issues.
This collie site has links to info on thyroid and skin issues in the breed
http://www.ida.net/users/tonyd/Collie_Health.htm
It could be a fungus or yeast infection.
You can read about skin issues here
www.thepetcenter.com/gen/itch.html
And this site has a list of many of the skin issues possible
www.nzymes.com/Articles/dog_skin_hair_problems.htm
I would suggest as your vet hasn't been able to help you that you consider going to see a veterinary dermatologist. Your vet may be able to refer you to one or you might find one here
http://www.acvd.org/site/view/55607_FindADermatologistAlphabetical.pml
(I just checked and that site is currently having server issues so you might not be able to get to it today.)
With his age I'd suspect possibly thyroid might be the underlying problem. But as he had just been groomed it might have been something he picked up at the grooming shop too that the groomer wouldn't have known about.
Hope this helps you!
