My cairn terriers eat feces every chance they get like they ...

My cairn terriers eat feces every chance they get like they were starving for it. First is a cairn terrier more likely than other breeds to do this and is their anything that I can do to stop it. I give them "DETER" but I understand that is for their own feces. How can eating feces hurt my pet?
