I have a 5yr old male Cheasapeak Retriever who has developed a pink spike like growth near his left elbow. the base of the growth looks like a clear cyst, but most of the lesion is subcutaneous. He has begun to limp when he first stands up, but can run up and down the yard when he's outside. I think this is a hygroma, and would like to know more about it. Is it dangerous? I can e-mail a picture if you wish.

It had an area of drainage over the weekend so the vet put him on Keflex, and the drainage had stopped. The vet didn't know what the growth was.

It might be a hygroma but I'd have it biopsied to make sure of what it is. Draining it if its a hygroma can help.
He's a little old for it to be a histiocytoma (a self resolving tumor similar to a wart) but its still possible that is it too.
You can check those out here to see if that seems like it

If your vet doesn't know what it is you may want a referral to a veterinary dermatologist to work on the problem.
This site has a good list of skin issues in dogs causing lumps and bumps etc
