(Not a Pet Question?)

sick kitty

Sent to Pet Experts September 11 12:22 AM

I am fostering a stray cat for a friend. When we first picked her up we took her to the vet and she was given antibiotics. Her symptoms that i could see were very runny nose, trouble breathing due to congestion and goopy eyes. The meds worked for awhile. now she is sick again. I actually wrote in before like a week ago asking what to do about my friend who will now not take her back to the vet because she keeps reasoning away her problems. (i think she doesn't want to put the money out). When i told her about this site she said she'd take her, now pay day has come and gone and she's stalling again. I really don't have the money to take the cat to the vet because I have other pets of my own but I cant stand seeing her suffer. She also might be pregnant but im really not sure. Is there anything I can do tonight to help her. Some kind of home rememdy or otc med that is safe for animals. Its sad 'cause you can hear her trying to breath and she has trouble eating because of the congestion. Please help if you can.

One thing I would definitely consider doing is contacting your local humane society as they may be able to offer you treatment at a very low cost or at least steer you into the right direction of a veterinarian who will work on a sliding scale based on income in your area. Another option is to discuss the issues with your veterinarian and ask them if it is possible that they offer a good Samaritan discount as this is exactly the scenario you have here. Some do and it can range anywhere from 25-50% or no exam charge but you have to pay for medications. It would be best that she get evaluated but until then you can get little noses saline drops for her nasal congestion and place a drop into each nostril. This should help to loosen the mucous in her nose and make it easier for her to expel it. As you know cats who cannot smell don't eat very well so if she is a mom to be we really need to be sure she is getting ample nutrition. Use the drops several times a day. Put her in the bathroom with a hot shower running as steam too can help to loosen the discharge. Make sure she is eating kitten food and you might even want to offer her canned foods as they have a bit of a stronger smell. I cannot suggest anything oral at this time because of the possibility of pregnancy but do contact the vet, if you have good relations they may be able to work something out with you.

Thank you

Theresa

Reply to Theresa's Post: The saline drops, would they be sold in a regular pharmacy or in a pet store?
