metcam
Sent to Pet Experts August 03 09:37 AM

My cat was prescribed Metcam recently (July 06) because of crystals in his urine. After giving him the medication for several days I found the medication had expired April 05. Is the medication still effective? Will it harm my pet?
What steps can I take to keep the crystals from reforming as this is the third time in one year?

The metacam was most likely prescribed to reduce the pain he was in during the urinary tract infection. Were you dispensed a whole container box included from the veterinarian or did they pour some in a separate bottle. If it was poured in a separate bottle the label in the computer may not have been changed to the correct date. If you suspect it is expired take it back and get a new bottle. It won't hurt, but it may not be as effective as one that is current. Continuing the prescribed diet and not offering treats or other types of food will help to keep the crystals from reforming. Make sure after he has completed this round of antibiotics that he has his urine rechecked as sometimes they need two rounds to clear everything. There are also oral medication that you can choose to use if the food is not working out.

Good Luck

Reply to Theresa's Post: The medication was in the original bottle.
What oral medication can be used, since he only to be on the Hills prescription another 30 days?

After completing his antibiotics it is recommended he have a repeat urine sample to evaluate the presence of crystals. If they do in fact still exist the vet may decide to keep him on a prescription urinary diet like c/d or x/d indefinitely. If the diet is not an option for you because of the cost there is methigel or methioform tablets. It all depends on what type of crystal was present in the first place. Avoid any food with fish in it. Increase his canned foods and stick with a high quality diet like nutro or wellness.

Good Luck
