flea collar concerns

I have a puppy and we are not sure of the exact age. A vet friend looked at her and said she looked to be roughly 5 weeks and she was going to wait until this weekend when she SHOULD be about 6 weeks to give her shots. My problem is she has fleas and I bought a flea collar for puppies but when I got home I saw where it said do not put on dogs under 6 weeks. I was going to wait til this weekend but do you think it would do any harm to put it on her now.
