Question

Sent to Pet Experts December 30, 2005 1:25 p.m.

I'm almost certain my 6 yr old, 11 pound min. schnauzer has tracheal collapse because of her difficulty with breathing episodes and this morning she had a definite honking sound, louder than generally. She has had this for about 2 months now. Do you know of any specialists in the diagnosis and treatment/surgery for this problem or is it a fairly routine procedure that a general veterinarian can perform??

Optional Information:
Age: 6; Female; Breed: min. schnauzer

Already Tried:
diagnosis of enlarged heart led to treatment with enalapril and lasix

no, it happens always in the evening and night when she is resting. i only heard what i would characterize as a definite honk this morning and the rest of the time she cannot get her breath until a few gulps.

No. A reverse sneeze can happen at any time of the day. And that might be what you are seeing. They have the same cause as a regular sneeze but are much more dramatic. The dog will inhale and exhale rapidly and they might honk. It can go on for up to 2-3 minutes. It's quite disturbing to us but is not bad for the dog. You can help it by eliminating the use of carpet powders, cleaning well and dusting/sweeping so that there are fewer irritants.

Your regular vet can do a treacheal exam and can refer you to a specialist if you need it.

I would start with the regular vet and then go from there.
