My 4yr old female, Shep/Rott mix has a knot about 5 inches from her rear on the underside of her tail. I noticed her whining and she is holding it funny. Still eats, drinks, and potties. What could it be.?

Optional Information:

It's not her actual anal area, it is down the length of her tail about 5-6 inches. She seemed fine this morning but this after noon she whined and started holding it differently. She does not like me touching it.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

The most common causes of skin growths and lumps are tumors either benign or malignant, infection, or hematoma. I would suggest that since she seems to be in pain that you have her seen by your veterinarian as they will want to possibly biopsy the lump to determine the exact cause. Most tumors are not painful so that is actually a good sign that it seems sensitive but since it can be related to infection or injury and she is holding her tail differently I would recommend that you have her seen as soon as possible.

Took her to the vet and it's a sebaceous cyst. She has taken antibiotics for the past week and she is much better. I am also using very warm wash cloths to try and bring it to a head. It appears to be being reabsorbed by her body.

Thanks Cheryl
