Question

our year old labrador has had a problem with her nose for

Sent to Pet Experts December 15, 2005 7:25 p.m.

Our 12 year old Labrador has had a problem with her nose for two months. Our regular veterinarian referred us to a specialist upon which they did a biopsy. They put her on antibiotics and other meds. Still no improvement. He's taken her off of everything except her arthritis medication. Still no improvement. I'm really getting worried. Her nose looks worse by the day. She seems totally happy though.

Optional Information:
Age: >12; Female; Breed: choc lab

Already Tried:
prednesone for 30 days then antibiotics for 30 days then taken her off all her meds except thyroid med taking rimadyl

Exactly what are you seeing with the nose?

Her nose looks like it's losing pigmentation and occasionally, looks like she has a cold. In other words looks like she needs to blow her nose.
Has a discharge sometimes.
The top of her nose looks crusty and white at the same time. Almost looks like you could scrub it and it would fall off. Weird, Huh?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Dog's noses will peel much like people's skin does, although it takes much more severe sun, wind and rain to make it happen. These problem are compounded when you have a lightly colored dog.

There is a product called "bag balm" that's a moisturizer. You can get it at wal mart. It works great for dog noses.

If there are wounds on the nose, you can clean the nose with peroxide or betadine and then apply some neosporin ointment. If this does not help, you will want to see the vet for an antibiotic.

Thyroid problems CAN cause nose and foot problems so you might want to have the vet check her thyroid levels again and adjust her meds. Some people have to go so far as to tattoo the nose to promote healing.

Let me know if you still have questions.

Thanks for your reply. Somehow I think it's more serious than that. She spends most of the day indoors with us, she's not exposed to the sun or wind.
I will ask about bag balm, though. Thank you.
I'm taking her to our regular vet today to pick up prednesone for the weekend. The specialist ordered it. It worries me to know this specialist in allergy and dermatology is not sure what's wrong with her.
I'm pretty sure they've tested her thyroid, though I'll ask again today. They've done quite a few blood tests.
I wish I could wave a magic wand. We love this dog so much.
