Question

Bloody diarrhea after spaying

Sent to Pet Experts April 30, 2005 12:03 a.m.

My 8 month old tabby cat has just been spayed. We found bright blood in her diarrhea. What could be causing this? What might have caused this? What should we do now? Should we worried?

REPLIED Check Mark

Stress can cause it and also from her not going all day. I would keep a close eye on it and if she continues to act normal and it doesn't continue then no need for a vet visit.

Thank you for your quick response. In my research on the net, I read that if a cat is in heat when spaying is performed, it may cause some complications like cutting of blood vessels. Could this also be the reason for blood in her diarrhea?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

The blood vessels are much more engorged with blood if the cat is in heat so the surgery is more difficult but it will not cause you to see more blood in the fecal matter.

I would keep an eye on it and, if she's eating well and and activity is good, you can wait and see if she improves on her own.
