Question

Gelation Substance in Stool

Sent to Pet Experts April 27, 2005 3:19 p.m.

My cat is about 13-15 months old. She vomited 4-5 times yesterday for first time. I also noticed in her stool a clear gelatin like substance and on her. Is this something to worry about? I had also put antibiotic ointment on her tummy that had a "reddish" soar, but very little. Could she have licked it? But I am concerned about the gelatin substance I noticed on her tummy, my bed, and in her stool. Please let me know. And also concerned about the red soar on her tummuy. I thought she just scratched herself. Donna

REPLIED Check Mark

You need to see the vet to rule out parasites.  Many people don't and they go by site alone.

Mucus is normally present in the intestinal tract and, when you see it, it looks almost gelatinous and there might be blood present as well.  This indicates gastrointestinal upset.

If it doesn't improve after 2 days, you should see your vet to rule out a bigger problem.

Let me know if you have more questions.

The day after she improved and did not vomit. Your email first suggests a vet to rule out parasites; but then suggests if no improvements then see the vet. Do you feel a vet visit is imperative to rule out the parasites or not. Thanks so much for your help.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

If it improves on its own within a few days, you do not need to see the vet.  If it does not or it gets worse, you will need to see the vet.

Your cat should be seen by the vet once a year for a general exam.  If you have not been on that schedule, this would be a good time to start.
