Question

bumps

Sent to Pet Experts March 28, 2005 9:12 p.m.

My cat has some "bumps" on his chin that have started to bleed. He has also started to lose weight even though he maintains the same diet. He is 18 years old. Could the bumps be cancer?

No, not likely. At 18 yrs old the immune system is not what it used to be, most likely you are dealing with bacterial folliculitus (much like acne) and the bumps and bleeding is from that. Clean the area with phisoderm and apply benzoyl peroxide.

I recommend getting bloodwork to see why the weight loss, many times if there is a compromise in kidney or liver, a switch of food can help.

Good Luck,

Thank you, I will try the Phisoderm and benzol peroxide. Our vet said that he could do surgery to remove the bumps but I really dont know if I should put an 18 year old cat through anethesia. I have gotten them to scab over but he scratches them and they start to bleed again. Thanks again and if I need to I will be back for more advice.
