Question

bumps and hair loss

Sent to Pet Experts March 17, 2005 6:56 p.m.

My cat has small bumps and hair loss in small areas around her whole
body. She has a mental breakdown everytime we go to the vet. We just
used an over the counter flea and tick control which we have used before
and she just got her booster shots. Any idea what it is?

Mites are usually small (microscopic) parasites that burrow down into the skin and cause hair loss..also known as mange.

Your cats description sounds like flea allergies. One or two bites from a flea starts a vicious cycle of  licking, chewing, bumps, hair loss...etc.

Your vet can give a cortizone injection and all of these things stop for about 4 weeks...in the mean time you need to put your cat on a better flea product. Advantage or Frontline is safer for cats and works longer.  You need to apply it every 25-28 days or the cycle will start again.

Good Luck,

Dr.V
