Question

Nail Infection????

Sent to Pet Experts March 07, 2005 3:43 p.m.

How do I treat a nailbed infection in my dog. She’s not in pain but her nails are black near the hairline.

Is there any changes in the nailbeds aside from this...any chewing? swelling? limping?

None whatsoever. Although she had been licking it so much that some of the hair came off her middle toe.
I've been soaking it in Domeboro solution which seems to help. She isn't licking it anymore but the nail bed is still dark and she is red between her toes.

We think that those infections are yeast driven. Try purchasing some miconazole foot cream (athletes foot) and use that daily for about 1-2 weeks and let me know. If that doesn't help resolve it (if improvement...it can take longer than a few weeks) you probably need to seek out a vet to examine and put on oral medications.

Good Luck,

Thank you. What should I look for improvement wise?

I would consider improvement, decrease in the brown around the nail and decrease in the dog licking the area. Make sure right after you put this on...that you walk/exercise the dog or do something with the dog so that it doesn't start immediately licking that area.  The drug has to be absorbed to be beneficial!
