Question

My Greyhound can't move after pain medication

Sent to Pet Experts January 30, 2005 10:21 p.m.

Hello...I have a Greyhound that had to have 6 teeth pulled on Monday of last week. The vet perscribed Torbutrol & Metacam for pain. I had been giving him the Torbutrol (1 mg) at night and the Metacam (liquid) during the day. The first few days he was a bit groggy but able to move around. Now, he is so drugged up that he cannot even stand up or even move himself around at all. I did not change the doseage & he has been eating. My husband has to carry him out to go to the bathroom. He will not urinate, but he has had several bowel movements. What should we do?

You need to stop everything...and if you have an emergency facility close by you may want to consider going in tonight or first thing in the morning. Neither of these medications should cause the lethargy you are describing.  Metacam is like doggy advil...there is no depression with this medication. Torbutrol is a narcotic but with only 1mg daily it has no more sedation than taking a spoonful of cough syrup.

I am concerned the problem is more.  Is your dogs eyes or gums yellow?

HELLO DR. V -

I AM WRITING ABOUT MY GREYHOUND. WE TOOK HIM TO OUR VET ON MONDAY AND HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CUSHINGS DISEASE. THE IS ON SEVERAL MEDS. AND IS STILL BED RIDDEN.( CLEAN UP HAS BEEN A FULL TIME JOB) HE REALLY CANNOT MOVE YET, OTHER THAN BEING ABLE TO REACH AROUND TO LICK HIS STOMACH AND HIND QUARTERS. HE MOVED HIS TAIL AND LEGS A LITTLE YESTURDAY, BUT THAT IS IT. WE WERE TOLD THAT IT COULD TAKE QUITE A FEW MORE DAYS BEFORE WE SEE ANYTHING SIGNIFICANT, BUT WE ARE HAVING TROUBLE BEING OPTIMISTIC. ESPECIALLY BECAUSE HE IS SUCH A COUCH POTATO ANYWAY - DESPITE HAVING "CUSHINGS DISEASE". HE DIDN'T EAT MUCH TODAY AND I HAVE BEEN GIVING HIM WATER IN SMALL AMOUNTS THROUGHOUT THE DAY & EVENING. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONCERN...IT HELPS HAVING YOU TO WRITE TO.
YOURS TRULY,
MICHELLE JOHNSON

I am REALLY confused.  I don't see how ANYTHING you have described can lead to a dog not being able to move...maybe I missed something?? Cushings usually doesn't manifest like the signs you are describing. Were there tests run??

HELLO AGAIN DR V -
WELL, I DID NOT MENTION TO YOU THAT WHEN WE TOOK LANCELOT IN TO THE VET THE FIRST TIME, HE DISCOVERED THAT 6 TEETH NEEDED TO BE PULLED & HE DID AN X-RAY AND DETERMINED THAT HE HAD AN ENLARGED SPLEEN. HE THOUGHT THAT LANCE MAY HAVE A TUMOR. WE THOUGHT THAT HE'D PROBABLY HAVE TO HAVE EXPLORITORY SURGERY. SO A FEW DAYS LATER LANCE STARTED TO BECOME INCOMPACITATED ( I THOUGHT FROM THE MEDS...THAT IS WHEN I E-MAILED THIS WEBSITE) THEN WHEN WE WENT TO THE VET MONDAY HE RAN OTHER TESTS TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG. THE TESTS RAN WERE: CBC,CYTOLOGY SMEAR,URINALYSIS,EKG & 2 X-RAYS. HE WAS PRESCRIBED- MITOTANE/LYSODREN 500MG,PREDNISONE 20 MG. CLAVAMOX & POTASSIUM GEL
I WAS READING THAT CUSHINGS CAN CAUSE MUSCLE WEAKNESS & LETHARGY. THE VET THINKS THAT THE STRESS OF HIS TEETH BEING PULLED PUT HIM OVER THE EDGE & TRIGGERED THE SYMPTOMS OF THE ILLNESS TO GET WORSE CAUSING LANCE'S IN-ABILITY TO WALK OR STAND.

 Okay...

The problem with getting information online is it is not all inclusive with everything. A mass in the abdomen/spleen is pretty significant. The muscle weakness in a dog from Cushings can cause lethargy...but inability to get up and move, I have not seen.  Anesthesia cand definately cause underlying things to manifest.

Well if you need me anymore let me know...I will keep you all in my prayers that the medications improve his health.

DR.V
