Bichon Birth questions
Sent to Pet Experts January 23 04:58 PM

My Bichon gave birth to seven pupies 2 days ago, she is very lethargic and still has some (very little) discharge from the birth canal and 2 of her nipples seem swollen and/or bruised. She ate yesterday and vomited and has continued drinking today but hasn’t eaten anything. I was planning on taking her to the vet in a day or so (the blizzard has hurt travel) but I am not sure if I should try an emergency room or not

A little discharge is normal after giving birth.  She's probably exhausted.  Taking cate of seven puppies can be pretty tiresome.  Also, newborn puppies are not the most gentle creatures and that's probably why you are seeing the bruising around the nipples.

Since she's vomiting, you should pull up all the food and offer her a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice or boiled hamburger and rice.  This will help to settle her stomach and most dogs find it to be quite palatable.

You should probably take her and the puppies in to the vet for a general wellness exam as soon as the weather clears.  The vet will want to check her out and listen to the little ones.

Let me know if you have more questions.
