Can you tell me a little more about the immune disorder? Also, did the hair start thinning "after" the treatment, or was it there prior to use of the prednisone?

Reply to Cheryl's Post: Her hair and tail were very thick prior to the prednesone. The immune disorder: About 4 months ago,she got large red/purple bruises on her tummy which rapidly spread over her body and then she began to have blood come from her nose and mouth. Emergency vet said she was bleeding internally. We almost lost her (5 yrs old), but thanks to the medicines and the predisone she seems sooo much better. At first she swelled up so badly that even her eyes were squinty, but she has almost returned to her pre-ill weight and look. Then, just recently, I noticed hair everywhere, followed by clumps in her fur which needed to be brushed out. But now she is becoming almost bald in her hind-quarter area, especially noticable on her once fluffy tail. She is still not quite as energetic as she was, but you'd have to know her to notice. Thought this might just be a small problem solved with a vitamin or something - will get her to vet if you think it could be more serious. Thank you, Customer (name blocked for privacy)

Hello again,

I am sorry to hear of all the trouble your little girl has has to endure. Actually, a supplement was going to be my very next suggestion.

A suppressed immune system is cause in itself for hair loss in out pets. As she was weakened by the infection, her body lost important vitamins & minerals needed to mantain a health coat , as well as healthy skin.

In addition; certain nutrients that are sometimes implicated in hair loss are actually "essential" fatty acids.

To try a more "natural" approach, we recommend flaxseed oil or the amino acid L-cysteine.

Dosages: Flaxseed oil, 1 500-milligram capsule or up to 2 tsp. (of powder) daily.
L-cysteine, 500 milligrams 1 time daily, (not with food).

In using these, you should see a change to her coat with 7 days of continued use.

These can be obtained in most places that carry vitamins, and are fairly inexpensive.

I hope this might help some..Goodluck, and if you still have concerns, you might consider taking her to the vet to see what else they can suggest.
