ear problem
Sent to Pet Experts January 04 12:08 PM

I have an 8 year old Black Lab. who is having ear problems. Started out with ear odor and shaking of head. Went to the Vet. said yeast infection, gave me some ointiment, problem got worst, now dried blood and a strong odor, and a lot of head shaking. Is there a solution I can mix to put in his ear to help solve this problem, or is a expensive trip back to the Vet. a must?

A trip back to the vet is a must. If you put anything in the ear at this point, you can cause deafness, especially if the ear drum is already compromised.

If the prescribed medications are not working, your vet can culture the ear to see what antibiotic would be most effective. There is a small amount of extra cost and you will have to wait for the test results to come back but it is well worth it.

If the ear infection persists and the head shaking doesn't stop, your dog could end up with a hematoma. The last dog that we had treated for a hematoma cost about $280.

These infections can be painful so you need to see the vet right away.
