Question

Lucy in pain

Sent to Pet Experts December 28, 2004 11:27 a.m.

My beagle (approx. 6-7 yoa and about 33 lbs)yelps, cries and bites when I pick her up, hands around her middle. First experience was about one week ago, and has happened twice again since. She is otherwise pretty much fine, eating normally, with normal urine/feces. She’s a bit mopey too. We’ve got an appt with vet tomorrow, but am concerned about immediate emergency?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

As long as she is eating and pottying normal and her behavior seems to be alright, I do not see a problem waiting until tomorrow.  She may have slightly injured herself - jumping, going upstairs....  Does she have any old injuries that could produce arthritis?  It could be something like that to make her "touchy".

I would let her rest and keep your normal routine today.  I wish you the best of luck at your visit tomorrow - hope all is fine with her.

REPLIED Check Mark

It sounds like possible back trouble to me. Beagles have been
known to suffer back ailments. Be sure that your vet checks that
out.
Until then, I would keep her on cage rest. You do not want her
to injure herself more. keep her calm and quite (I know that is
hard sometimes) and take her outside to use the bathroom on a
leash.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot -- I'll definitely check that out with the vet. The photos on your website are adorable. Makes me want to get more beagles for sure.
