Question

Boston Vomit!

Sent to Pet Experts December 09, 2004 12:33 p.m.

My boston terrier puppy (12 weeks) seems to get the hiccups often, many times it’s upon awaking. He also has recently developed a vomiting issue. He has vomited about 3 times in the last 4 days, it appears he is eating too much/too fast as the kibble is still in it’s original shape like he’s swallowed it whole. The vomit smells like feces and he tries to eat it. Could this just be a function of overeating? I have now made it a point to ration his meals and to wet his food instead of giving him free eating of dry kibble. I just started that this morning so I do not know of the results yet. I guess my main questions are 1. Does puppy vomit smell like feces? 2. Can a puppy overeat and cause himself to vomit? 3. Could this be tied to his hiccups? Thanks in advance!

 1. Sometimes yes 2. yes 3.yes...Continue to soak his food prior to feeding him and see if that helps. Sometimes something that also may help is placing a large rock(his head size no smaller so he won't try and eat it) inside his bowl and put his food around it. What this does is makes his have to eat around the rock and it will slow him down. I had a doberman that did I did that with and it worked well.
If the vomiting continues even though you do these things then a vet visit will be needed.
Good luck!

Do you have a cat/catbox in the house?

No cat in the house or anywhere near. He is(was) allowed to eat at will, I now have him on a 3x a day schedule and I am wetting his food. He only experiences this occasionally and all other signs are good. Good energy, alert, playful, wet nose etc.

Thank you Dr. Vamvakias. I have heard many opinions about the poop smell and a few breeders have reported they have experienced this as well, not common but not uncommon. I'm happy to report 24hours w/o a problem, as I have split the feedings into 3 per day and am petting him while he eats. Seems to calm him. I'll try the rock thing soon. Thanks to all.
