My dog has been getting sick on and off for months. His symptoms are: arched back, slow movements, lack of appetite, lathargic, possible stomach pains. What could this possibly be and what treatment is there?

Reply to ZooCVT's Post: He is 2 years old, boxer, he is at the vets all the time and he is up to date on his vaccines. He does not have valley fever, and when he gets sick I believe it is is white blood count is up.

Reply to Olivers Mom's Post: Yes, but all of it has come up normal. When he gets sick his temp. is high, and he is dehydrated. So the vet re-hydrates him and sends him home with antibiotics and in 2-3 days he is better. but this happens every 3-4 months.

Reply to Olivers Mom's Post: No, I don't think so the vet has not mentioned that. Does that come and go?

Lyme disease doesn't "come and go" however if it isn't treated, the symptoms can be similar to what your dog is experiencing and it effects the kidneys.  Kidney probs can cause dehydration.  Could also be pancreatitis, addison's disease and more.  In my opinion, I would demand the vet to be much more assertive in his testing - and/or have a second opinion.  Many things can be undiagnosed simply because the vet office does not have the proper equipment.

So many things this could be.  This constant rehydration is only managing the problem, not treating it.  I'm sorry I couldn't help you directly.  I'm concerned about your dog and I hope you continue to search what is going on!  He's so young I hate to think of him having to go through this all the time.

Wish you the best

Thank you for all of your help. He has been tested for Valley Fever 3 times and all times have come up negative. He is still sick today. He won't drink water but he will eat. His back is more arched today and his eyes are sunken. I have an appointment with the local vet tomorrow. Should I request an x-ray on his chest?

Thank you so much. Here is something weird. When we give Maximus Rimadyl or Ib Profin he gets better. What do you think of that?

The rimdayl didn't work this time he is back in the vets office this morning. I asked the Dr. about meningitis and he said he gets better too quickly for it to be that. But he has not tested for it. I am at my wits end with this, he is so sick it is hard to watch him. The Dr. said I should take him to a neurological specialist. What do you think? Should I ask to do more blood tests before then?

He has never had a neurological exam. No x-rays of the veterbral column. Though I told the vet to take any x-rays he needs to. When he is sick he can barely get up or move. I had to pick him up today he is hesitant to get up or down off the couch or bed. But when he is well he has no problems with balance at all. It is not that he is wobbly when he is sick it is that he is so stiff he can't move. He looks like he is in complete pain. He also gets a fever when he is sick and it can get up to 104. At that point he is out of it in the head. I am hesitant to bring him to a specialist until I exhaust all my options with the vet. Not to sound shallow but a specialist is very expensive, not that I wouldn't ever take Max to see one but I don't want to if I can find out what is going on at a regular vet. I don't know.
