pets right ear,smelly,waxey

smelly wax in one ear,had drops,wiped out so offten carefully with ear wipes plus sanatizing ones. 9yr old border collie.claws at it licking paw sometimes.always a hard wax lump just outside ear.a vet gave me drops but never worked.
has been going on for nine months approx.thank you..
