my hamster is old and is ready to die the vet has already ...

Sent to Pet Experts October 25, 2006 2:37 a.m.

my hamster is old and is ready to die the vet has already seen him and so Ive been caring for him, making him as comfortable as possible. well Ive noticed that his genital has gotten plugged up each time he goes and Ive cleaned him. I noticed white mucas coming out of his pee hole and when it came out it was very long and sort of tore off . Im terribly concerned it may be his penis coming apart. does this sound ridiculous?

I checked this mornign the piece of mucas or what ever came out last night and he is laying in the same position he was before he refuses pedialyte Iv given him warm soymilk wiht a powder supplmnt from the vet he use to drink that now he takes a litte and pushes it away.he just stoped eating his food yesterday. I feel so bad he keeps hanging on and Icant bear to take him in to be euthanized. the lady at the vet said I cant be there and they put a needle into the heart giving him a heartattack. I asked if it was painful she only said that it was over fast.

Dear friend,

I really understand and sympathize with how you feel. You have had your little pal for about three years and taking to vets to be put down would be so very hard. Once a pet stops eating it is because he has given up and does not want to live anymore. He is either sick or tired and he is going to refuse food or water. He is not "coming apart" - his little systems are just shutting down so nothing is quite right.

I would suggest you take him out of the cage and hold him. Spend as much time with him as possible. Say goodbye to your little friend in your own time and in your own way. I know you will miss him very much.

If you have any more questions or want to talk more about this - I will be here for you, just let me know.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri

thank you for your understanding Ive watched him go down hill for the past month and my beleving is that he will pass away peacefully in his sleep dreaming about all the fun he had with his mommy. I didnt think I would feel so much for the little guy. I never cried this much, my husband is trying to understand my feelings and it seems that my friends and my mom think Im acting a little ridiculous. thank you for your compassion and understanding.
