our 10 month old syrian male started with a swelling
Sent to Pet Experts October 15 07:41 PM

our 10 month old syrian male started with a swelling in his neck 2 days ago that moved up his face and was swelling his eye closed. I treated the eye with boric acid and water as directed. Now the eye is popping out and he can't close it. His neck and face are still swollen. He makes a clicking sound when I touch the eye. He is lethargic. What can we do fast to help him till the vet opens tomorrow.

Optional Information:
Age: <1; Male; Breed: syrian teddybear hamster

Already Tried:
boric acid for the eye and peroxide for the swelling chin and face.

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do. You can try putting cold compresses on the swollen area and see if that helps any. Keeping the eye moist is a must. If he is with any other hamsters then seperate him from them in case they start to bother him. One of them may have bitten him and caused an abcess. If he is alone then make sure that he is kept warm and try to offer him some water from a dropper to help keep him hydrated until he can be seen.

Reply to Animal Eyes's Post: Hi, You said that keeping the eye moist is a must so how exactly should I do this and what would you recommend I use? How often? As for the cold compress, is it safe to use ice is plastic?

If you have any petroleum jelly you can put a small amount of that on the eye or eve ky jelly if that is all that is available. Plastice ice is ok, what you want is a way to keep the area cool. The hard part is to keep the swelling cool but not chill the hamster. Its a difficult balance I know but if you can work something that way would help.
