Question

stuffed nose

Sent to Pet Experts October 14, 2006 2:57 p.m.

My old dog, who has suffered by chronic dry eye for her entire lifetime, has recently developed what appears to be a stuffed nostril. Mucous, often dried or caked, appears to be demising the passage of air through that nostril (the same side as the dry eye). While she clearly is not suffering, she does appear to labor to dry to clear the passage. Oddly (perhaps not), I too suffer from a similar condition and constantly take a decongestant to help alleviate the congestion, and it seems like her symptoms are very similar to mine. I try to remove the caked mucous, but obviously she cannot blow her nose like a human. She has been to vet offices so many times in her life (2 back surgeries, spleen removal, serving as working patient for vet students in their ophthalmology training at Cornell, tumor in her foot), I don't wish to place any more strain on her for what appears like a minor condition. Is there anything you can suggest. Thanks.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Check in her mouth. This is commonly a sign of a tooth that has abscessed into the nasal area and is draining there. If she has red gums, tartar build up, or a tooth that looks broken or bad that might be it.
She may need antibiotics and a dental cleaning.
The reason you would want to do the dental is that the bacteria from the teeth can spread around the body impacting heart, liver and kidneys.
To clean the nose area you can use sterile saline, either a nose spray for children or the type contact lens wearers use, to clean the blocked nose area out.
Hope this helps you!
