Question

puffy spots on the face

Sent to Pet Experts October 11, 2006 1:04 a.m.

I have a chow-lab mixed dog about 3 1/2 years old and 50 pounds. She has developed quarter to dime size puffy spots on her snout and jowls. I think it may be a food allergy or fleas or spider bites but I have not isolated the source of the problem (or the cure).
She doesn't seem to be in pain, but she has been scratching at her sides (but not as much at her face).

If you feed out of a plastic dish this could be a dermatitis from rubbing her muzzle on the plastic while eating. You could try swapping to stainless or ceramic.
Fleas are another good suspect and using Frontline on her might help resolve this.
You can try some neosporin ointment on the sores you can see.
But these spots might also be mange mites, ringworm fungal infection, a skin infection etc. so I'd see the vet with her for an in person diagnosis and the right treatment.
Hope this helps you!
