Question

Our very loved family member and hunting companion has a uterus infect

Sent to Pet Experts October 11, 2006 12:11 a.m.

We have a female labrador that we love very much. We sent her out of state to be trained for hunt test and field trials and we would like her to have maybe one batch of pups and pass on her traits to some well bred puppies. About a month ago she was in our backyard that has a large solid fence around it while she was in heat. A large dog probably part lab, but really big dug a hole under our fence and mated with her. We were upset, we didn't want her pregnant at this young age and we were sad that she would be pregnant also during the hunting season. A family member told us of a shot you could get that would make her not get pregnant. This excited us as we were concerned for her health and this being a large dogs would probably bring large puppies for her. We called our vet and he said they had this shot and to bring her right in we needed to get it done as close to the date of mating as possible. This didn't give us the time we should have taken to research this shot out more. We asked what the risks would be before he gave her the shot and the nurse told us that a uterus infection could be a very low risk and we never see it happen. So we thought if that is all the risk we would do it. A month later she is not pregnant, but she has had a lot of brown creamy discharge coming from her vagina and she had lost 6lbs in 1 month. We ran her back down to our vet and he told us that she has a uterus infection and suggested that we spay her. I told him that we really don't want to do this, she has been trained and is a hunt test dog and is just starting to get into competitions. He then gave her a shot of antibiotics and gave me a bottle of antibiotics to give her twice a day and if I did that there is a slight chance it could clean her out, if not we need to spay her. That was 2 weeks ago and I was on top of all her medicine and mixing up special food at night that she loved to make her eat and gain some weight back. There is still a little discharge coming out, what should I do? I have been reading on the internet about some other risks that we were not aware of either like bone marrow disease. How can I check to see if she has this? We are sick, this is our best friend and if we would have known that the shot had all these risks there would have been no way that we would have done it. We could really use some advice as we want to assure the health of our family's best friend.

I would suggest prostaglandin treatment be considered

I would suggest working with a vet who is a reproductive specialist and this site may help you find one

Hope this helps you!

Thank you for your help, that was very quick, great answers, and great reading material. So this Prostaglandins is a way that we could get around having to spay her, allow her to heal, and still have pups later possibly? I just want to make sure, is there any side effects to this procedure? I appreciate the list of veterinarian reproduction specialists, I live in Utah do you know how I could find any specialists locally? Thanks again for your help.

The prostaglandin treatment is a good possibility for her. Worst case would be a spay but you already face that.
I'd have a vet evaluate your dog in consideration of the treatment.
You can check the phone book to see if anyone lists themselves as a repro specialist or see if this vet or a referral from them will work as they are involved in semen freezing they may be able to connect you with a reproductive vet practice or be running one themselves
