Question

Feline Eye Ulcer - Vet Expert Please

Sent to Pet Experts September 30, 2006 1:02 p.m.

For a VET - Cat - I've got a cat that is a foster - he has a very obvious eye ulcer. We've treated ulcers in the past but I can't remember which of the opthalmic products I've got is the preferred one. I don't want to damage the eye - Gentamicin sulfate; neomycin-polymyxin,Dexamethazone; terramycin are what I have on hand - my vet's office has closed for the weekend - I can probably get just about anything I need - I just need to know which is the ideal for a very apparant corneal ulcer. TIA!

Whevere treating a possible corneal ulcer, you want to avoid anything with steroids in it, as steroids will worsen the ulcer - that eliminates the neo/poly/dexamethasone. That leaves Gentamicin and Terramycin. Of these two, I strongly recommend treating with Terramycin. Terramycin has tetracycline, a good broad spectrum antibiotic, that particulary has excellent activity against the most comon secondary bacteria to invade a feline corneal ulcer, clamydia. Treat the eye with Terramycin three time daily until such time that you can see a vet.

Thanks - I rarely deal with fosters or rescues - we've had selkirks in the past develope corneal ulcers but terramycin was never the med used in the past. I had thought it was gentamicin -but - we'll go with the terramycin - I'd prefer to start this today rather than waiting for the office to open on Monday.
