Question

feline cystitis

Sent to Pet Experts September 24, 2006 3:17 p.m.

My 10 year old female siamese had a rather serious bout wih cystitis about 2 years ago. She had been on amytriptiline but it was impossible to give, even as a formula to dab into the ear. She had mucusy and reddish discharges from her anal opening.   This has occurred several times in the past two years. The cat has been spraying urine straight out ever since being on amytriptiline.   The vet (Doylestown Medical Animal Clinic, Dolyestown, PA) finally agreed that as long as the cat was urinating, there was no serious problem. Discomfort was another story. I have 4 cats. They all eat Eukanuba low phs dry and canned, Royal Canin(now IVD) urinary SO dry and canned and IVD canned CONTROL.   The only non ph control food I give is a 1/4 tsp. of 9 lives canned tuna mixed with the IVD CONTROL in the morning and 1 slice of Healthy Choice sliced chicken or turkey in the evening(broken and divided for all 4 cats. As treats they get Purina ONE urinary low ph, small amount and PetSmart's brand Sophisticat urinary low ph dry, also a small amount.

She has been generally quite fine on this diet. My concern at this time, and I don't want to take her to the vets if I can understand that her discharge is not a major cause for concern if it stops in a day or two. It is reddish, and liquidy. She seems to be fine. She eats and I am sure she has been urinating because it is easy to spot her urine as it splashes up the sides of the covered litter boxes and in the garage and breezeway I keep litter around the box to absorb her spraying over the sides. She seems to be urinating every day a normal amount. Only one time usually, but that has been her normal for 2 years now. I am just not sure if this is inflammation from a cyst which will hopefully dissolve or pass and the food and nature should or may help heal it.

I would appreciate your consoling words.

This can be caused from an internal parasite such as worms as well as a dietary intolerance and can as you say correct itself in a day or two if this is due to the diet. But since you have not made any changes to the diet it could be related to an internal parasite such as worms so you do need to monitor this condition closely. It could very well also be related to a cyst although if this becomes worse or she seems to be in any pain then I would not wait to have her seen since they have such sensitive stomachs it can also be caused by the medication that she has to take due to her condition. It is safe to feed her a bland diet of cooked rice and/or boiled chicken or beef to see if this seems to help and as long as she is urinating and having normal bowel movements monitoring right now is what is best but if this does increase or discomfort seems to be an issue I would recommend that you have her seen.
