Fleas

Sent to Pet Experts September 23 05:34 PM

Found a flea on my Roxie (jack russell). She scratched all night. Took her to the groomer who gave her a flea bath and oatmeal bath. Did not find any fleas, just some "flea dirt". Brought her home and she continues to scratch and roll on her back. It seems so annoying for her. My vet is closed until Monday. What can I do for her to make her more comfortable?

Optional Information:
Age: 2; Female; Breed: Jack Russell

Already Tried:
Flea bath and oatmeal bath. She originally was on Harty 4 in 1. Was scheduled for another treatment at the end of this month.

Its very likely she is itching as she is sensitive to flea bites. Just one bite can set off the itching.
You can see if some plain Benadryl will help her. A common dose is 1mg per pound of dog every 8-12 hours. Might make her a little sleepy.
You may also want to spray the floors in your house with a spray to kill adult fleas and keep the eggs from growing up to biting stage. I use Zodiac Fleatrol spray which you can see here

Pet supply stores also carry it. It works well at my house to eliminate any flea infestations.
Hope this helps you!

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: Didn't realize that Benedryl is safe for animals. Concerned that I may give her too much. She is about 20 lbs. give or take. Also where would I get a measuring spoon? Does 20 MG equal something else?

Yes it is but it must be plain not cold type as the 'additives' in the cold medicines such as tylenol or ibuprofen are not safe for pets.
Check the bottle it should say how many mg per teaspoon.
The tablets are usually 25mg each and that would be well within tolerance range. You can go up to double the 1mg per pound no problem but you may end up with a sleepy lethargic dog so the lower dose is usually what I suggest.
for example
Active Ingredient in each 5 mL of Childrens Diphenhydramine HCl (benadryl) is 12.5 mg and
5 mL = one teaspoonful
So you know there are 12.5 mg per teaspoon of medication meaning for your dog 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons (two allows for some spray back!) of the children's strength liquid would be about right. You have to look at your bottle's directions and info to figure it out.
