Milk production is partly a matter of timing, from our point of view (I myself have been used to dogs who had milk a week ahead of delivery), and partly a matter of stimulation of the hormone system by the labor and suckling of the puppies! Oxytocin, which is the primary hormone of labor and delivery, is also the primary hormone that starts lactation. Many dogs do not have any milk flowing until the pups started nursing.
Just in case, have a supply of puppy replacement milk on hand with the right size bottles for your breed. It is best to see if Mommy will lactate on her own, but if you are prepared to help you will not feel so nervous.
***You can call and schedule a pre-delivery physical exam now so that your vet can check everything out for you and be ready if you need help with the puppies. Most offices appreciate knowing ahead of time when puppies are due.***
Good luck!!
