Question

Feline Spontaneous Pneumothorax

Sent to Pet Experts September 08, 2006 10:03 p.m.

My cat has a spontaneous pneumorthorax with the result of bullae in the lungs. The rapid breathing started Thursday August 31, 2006 and was mis-diagnosed next day by local vet as having just irritation. He went to surgery to diognose spontaneous pneumothorax on Wednesday Sep 6, 2006 and found the bullae. The surgeon had to remove a third of his lungs. He is stable, but cannot breath without being in the oxygen tank and has problems when they tried to take out the chest tube. It is Friday Sep 8, 2006 and there is no improvements. There is still leakage somewhere in the lungs and has to remain with supported oxygen and chest tube to take out the air in the chest cavity. The vet institute has not seen a spontaneous pneumothorax in a cat before and doesn't have much information of prognosis. Part of Pathology came back that gave no real indication of infection, parasite, or cancer at the moment. Worried that there is still leakage and the remaining hole (from one of the TAPS done before the surgery to remove air in the chest) are not healing, my cat doesn't have much time left. If no improvements on Monday, the vet/surgeon is thinking of the worst. Is there a specialist or vet institute that has seen a case like this that has ANY information???

Optional Information:
Age: 8; Male; Breed: domestic longhair

Already Tried:
vet, surgery

I know it might seem like you're being ignored, but you aren't. This is a very tough situation and (we) are as stumped as your health caregivers so far.

Let me know what city/state you're in - maybe I can find something more out about a specialist/clinic more geared to this.

I know you're anxious and probably not even sleeping much, you obviously treasure this guy and my heart goes out to you.

Hang in there - just like he is so far!
