Feline dental question

My cat has had a history or gingivitus and smelly breath. Yesterday I noticed a 3/4th inch hard knot on his lower left toothline/jaw. The swelling had gone down to about a 1/2 inch knot today. He is great spirits and has no other symptoms (still eating hard food too). I visited a new vet with my cat today. After a 30 second exam, the Vet immediately said that it might be cancer and that they would have to do a biopsy in 1 week.... she then ordered a blood test to make sure he's healthy enough for the operation and then xrays of his chest to see if the cancer had spread to the lungs... in the meantime anti-biotics(clindamycin hydrochloride) for the next week. I asked why the xrays and bloodwork were necessary prior to seeing if the antibiotics worked... she had no answer - I then asked if it would make sense to wait until next Tuesday to do the tests & xrays to see if they were even necessary.... she said it made sense to wait.

Question: Do most Vet Doctors try to get you to pay for services that may not be needed by using cancer scare tactics? Could it be something less major? the vet really didn't want to answer that one....

In most cases they do not try to use this type of tactic to make more money but not all veterinarian's are the same. I do agree it does make sense to wait and see if the antibiotics worked but in the chance that this could be cancer they would need to do a biopsy to determine if it is malignant or not and if so then surgery would be becessary to prevent the cancer cells from spreading further throughout the body. The bloodwork would make sense to make sure that all the levels are normal to see if the surgery would be possible due to any health risks.

Based loosely on what I described ,what is the likelyhood that it is something less major? Abcess, etc...

ACCEPTED Check Mark

It could very well be an abcess as well as this will cause a knot to form just as a cancerous tumor would so the best thing to do is to have bloodwork at least performed while allowing the antibiotics to become effective as well. This way they are able to determine if there is a need for further treatment as with cancer it will cause an abnormality in the bloodwork to show up if this is more serious then an abcess or gum disease such as gingivitis.
