Hi, we have a 7 month old male chihuahua. his name is bentley. over the past 24 hours he has been vomiting (3-4 times/24 hours). his stool was normal this morning. the vomitus last night was a brown color , almost stool color, and this afternoon was less in quantity but still brownish fluid. he is also shaking much more than the usual little jitter once in awhile.
he's fed a diet of eukanuba natural rice formula (puppies 1-12 months). he always has fresh spring water available.
very concerned. please respond asap.
thanks,
jono

REPLIED Check Mark

If she is vomiting brown liquid that looks or smells like fecal matter, you may have an emergency on your hands. This is one of the most common symptoms of an intestinal obstruction so go ahead and see the vet with her right away.

The vet can do a simple x-ray that is not very expensive and rule this out (or in!).

But I do suggest a vet visit as soon as you are able.

Let me know if you want to discuss this more.

REPLIED Check Mark

You might see pain around the abdomen, vomiting, diarrhea (or failure to pass any fecal matter), lethargy, and inappetance.

Or you might not see any of these.

Did you see my last response above?

With some dogs, you won't see any symptoms aside from the foul smelling, brown liquid vomit. In others, you will see a tender abdomen, diarrhea, inappetance and lethargy.

If you want to wait and see if this resolves, I would at least switch him temporarily to a bland diet of only boiled chicken and white rice.

Then see how it goes.

NONE OF THOSE OTHER SYMPTOMS SEEMS APPARENT. WHAT OTHER CAUSES FOR THE VOMITING AS DESCRIBED. WOULD PREFER THE MOST LIKELY FIRST. (A SIMPLE DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS WOULD BE UNDERSTANDABLE) THANKS

WALTER & TAMMY,
MY QUESTION IS, WHETHER OBSTRUCTION IS THE MOST LIKELY DIAGNOSIS GIVEN THAT THE VOMITUS DID NOT HAVE AN ODOR, THE DOG IS PLAYING A LITTLE WITH THE OTHER CHIHUAHUA, AND HAS HAD A NORMAL STOOL THIS MORNING? IF IT'S NOT THE MOST LIKELY DIAGNOSIS, THEN WHAT IS? PLEASE.
