can any one explain the heat cycle for a chihuahua please?

I have a chihuahua that I have only had for 9 days she is 3 years old and unspeyed. The day after I bought her I noticed traces of blood in her wee so I have taken her to the vet and he said there is no infection she is indeed on heat! but I seen hardly any blood only a few traces in her wee and a couple of drops in her bed the day before yesterday and no male dogs are paying her and attention (my friend has a intact male) I am not wanting to breed from her but would like to know when she is in standing heat as to keep her away from male dogs, How long is a chihuahua heat cycle? and is it normal to only see a tiny amount of blood?
