Question

extremely high lipase level in Pug

Sent to Pet Experts August 26, 2006 11:54 p.m.

Dear Dr. ,
About 6 weeks ago my 4 yr. old pug was admitted to the animal hospital due to vomitting and diarrhea. X-rays showed a slight inflammation of his pancreas, and his bloodwork showed that his lipase level was in the high range (3557 U/L). He was kept off food for 2 days and given IV fluids and antibiotics. He made a quick recovery and was put on a special diet (Medi-Cal gastrointestinal formula). I recently brought him back for a follow-up test. His blood now showed his lipase level at 4918 U/L. He has not ate any people food, only the prescribed food and rawhide treats (the kind that break into small pieces). He is now on a stricter low fat food by Walthams (Royal Canin Lowfat LF20). Could the rawhide have caused his lipase level to increase or are there other conditions that could cause this? Outwardly his behaviour is normal, healthy and very active. What do you think may be the cause(s)?
Thank you,
B. Mercer

Hello,

Thank you for sending your question to Just Answer!

My "tiny" yorkie has the same condition. I am always very tempted to give him treats or other food as she sits there looking at me with those "begging" cute eyes!

However, you MUST stay strickly to the crunchy food. The rawhide treats contain perservatives, chemicals, etc. and even small amounts can cause problems and definetly increase the lipase level.

Did your vet mention Hill's Prescription Diet I/D? He may have not recommended it, as it is high in fat and with pugs they have a tendentcy to become overweight.

I hope this helps. If you need further information, please feel free to contact me.
