Question

cow injury

Sent to Pet Experts August 26, 2006 11:18 p.m.

I have a small calf (about 5-6 months old I think) that was given to me at a sale barn because they thought it was going to die and wanted to see if I could nurse it back to health. They said it had a gate fall on it. It almost died that first night but made it through. Now, though, it staggers as if drunk when it walks and it always moves it's head up and down like a bobble head doll. It looks healthy otherwise and is eating well and seems very alert. She is aware of everything going on around her. What is causing these symptoms and is there anything I can do to help her? Will she ever recover? It has been a week and 2 days since it happened.

Optional Information:
Age: <1; Female; Breed: cow

Already Tried:
gave her a shot of steroids in case she had brain swelling

REPLIED Check Mark

She may still need the steroids for a little while. One shot may not be enough to get all the swelling down. If not steroids then check with your vet and see if they recommend anything else to try. She may recover but it just may take a while.

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN SYMPTOMS LIKE THESE IN A COW? I CALLED MY VET BUT IT SEEMED TO ME THAT SHE WAS NOT REALLY SURE WHAT WAS WRONG WITH HER...SHE DIDN'T SEEM TO HAVE EVER HEARD OF SYMPTOMS LIKE THAT. SHE SAID IT SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS NEUROLOGICAL BUT THAT WAS ALL SHE COULD SAY.
