bowel obstrucitons

Sent to Pet Experts August 18 07:32 PM

My dog got into garbage that my neighbor likes to throw out his front door. Bones, old food whatever and my dog ate alot of whatever he had thorwn out there, He hasn't been able to have a bowel movement since Tuesday. The vets are treating him by giving him enemas and even put him under to give him warm water enemas. There is still an obstruction close to theend of the colon. Is there something we could give him to help break up the fecal matter so he can pass it easier? My vet is going to be out of the office all weekend and I'm worried about my dog suffering all weekend.

If enemas have been ineffective at clearing the obstruction, I would try using a lubricant laxative like mineral oil. You should be able to buy a small bottle at your local drug or grocery store. I would recommend that you give him about 2 tablespoons orally. This will help coat whatever is in the intestines and help move it on through.

If there is still nothing moving after12 hours, I would then use a stimulant laxative. (My preference in a case like this is Dulcolax...1 tablet for a dog this size).

It's also important to keep your dog hydrated. Many times, if there is an obstruction, the dog will stop drinking. Just be aware of this and encourage water consumption every chance you get.

These are of course just home remedies since your vet will be gone. If you do not see normal bowel movements by monday, I would suggest returning to the vet. Surgery might be required to get rid of the blockage, especially if there is a bone involve.
