We have a guniea pig, who we just discovered by taking him to our vet, has microscopic mites. He got a first round shot to kill all parasites, and we're to take him back Wednesday for his second shot. He did just great for a week, but the itching is starting to come back slowly. Is there anything we can do to help him until Wednesday?

Optional Information:
Age: <1; Male; Breed: Guniea Pig

Already Tried:
1st round shot @ vet. (Cattle wormer)

There is really nothing that you can do for right now other than change the bedding to remove any mites that may be living there. Check with your vet about getting some spray to use on the bedding during the treatment period.

I clean and wipe down the cage daily, use fresh aspen bedding, and also thoroughly wash food bowls, toys, and his igloo. I know that some things that we humans use can be harmful to animals. I did, however read that it is safe to use a little hydrogen peroxide and gauze pads on him. What about a little neosporin, or benadryl to help with the dry skin, or is that toxic for him?

It would really be better not to use anything else on him. By putting other products on him at this time could create other problems with the skin. It would probably be better to use a paper product to use for bedding for the time being, It would be easier and cheaper to clean up.

Thank you so much for the advice, it gives me peace of mind knowing that I'm doing all I can do for the little fellow. I just love him to death, and I hate to see him like this. I'll just sit tight until his trip to the vet on Wednesday. : )
