Question

labored brething/hoarse bark

Sent to Pet Experts August 12, 2006 2:59 a.m.

Hi,
I am desperate for help. I have the most unbelievlble dog, she was "so abused" when she was removed from her owner, that the shelter made me sign a "release of liabilty" on a GOLDEN RETRIEVER. Is there such a thing? Let me tell you, I knew the MOMENT I looked into her eyes, she was just amazing.

Fast forward 9yrs. She is at a vey healthy 88lbs. (She is a very large Golden) Her name is Dani (short for Danielle) because everyone assumes (including her) she's a male because of her size, and she loves to be dirty!

Almost a year ago she began breathing very heavy. I took her in to my vet, and was told (originally) it may be due to allergies. It never cleared up. She only got worse. All of a sudden, one evening she would NOT get up, showed no interest in her favorite food (King's Hawaiian Bread-she only gets this with meds-otherwise it's dog food-strictly!). I sat up with her all night, and the whole next day. On Monday, I saw my vet, who determined she needed (min) thyroid meds. She got better, except, for her breathing. Her breathing (after 4 diff antibiotic treatments) is still labored.

This is SO alarming to me why? This is a dog whose bark could be heard 6 houses away. Now, is only a squeak. A dog who, was "TAUGHT" by her best friend (a malamute-who passed away at 18) to howl at sirens-now refuses to do so.

All, because breathing takes more energy, and requires far too much, for her to participate in what she used to. I love this girl, more than you can understand. I have spent over $1200.00 in just the past month in blood tests and meds, and she is no better. I HAVE TO HELP HER. If you only knew how incredible this dog is.

RECENT EXAMLPE: She HAS an embedded foxtail near her vulva. I found it while grooming. I took her in to my Vet. He did an EXPLORATORAY without a "local" or "anesth". for over 12min!!!!!! I am telling you, he searched her "wound" with a tool without a local, anesth, or a muzzel!!! NO ONE in his office could believe what they saw that day. I have to help her and find out what is wrong. My Vet is at a loss, he's exhausted all test he knows. Can you help? I'm in Camarillo, CA. I need to find a VERY REASONABLE. OR FREE, doctor to help. This dog is EVERTYTHING to me, I love her so much. She has been through HELL, and shows nothing but love to everyone she sees. She deserves this chance, she's EARNED it. Please help her!
Thank you,
Julie Otalora
