Question

Golden Retriever Ear Swelling

Sent to Pet Experts October 28, 2004 1:35 a.m.

My female 11 year old golden retriever suddenly has what seems to be swelling of one ear. It’s in the part of the ear that flops over, not inside the ear itself. When you feel it between two fingers it is almost spongy. Is there anything I can do or do you think this is a vet emergency?

REPLIED Check Mark

It sounds like a hematoma and she will need to be seen by a vet.
It is not an emergency, but I would have it looked at soon.

A hematoma is when the blood veins in the ear pop and the ear
swells up with blood. Here is more info on it

Good luck!

Response to lcbryson's Post: It seems that the same type of thing happened to my other golden sometime ago but I can't remember what it was. It was either treated with benadryl or antibiotics.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Treating it with an oral antibiotic or antihistimine is not going to make the hematoma go away. It will need to be drained if its big enough. Sometimes if left untreated it will scar down and make the ear kind of narly looking but this takes a long time and in the mean time your dog is uncomfortable. Also, you need to find the reason it happened like was there something inside the ear to make him flap his ears and cause this. A vet visit is the best thing.
Good Luck!
