How long does it take to train a Blue Fronted

How long does it take to train a Blue Fronted Amazon to get on your finger or hand? He lets me pet him and takes treats from me but he owns his cage and does not like it when I go in it. I was told to do it anyway because he will get over it some day. But I want to be able to have him on my hand or should I just stop trying to teach him that? He is 7 months and I got him three weeks ago. I was also told to take him to a vet to make sure he is healthy, it seems fine but I do not know if he is sick or not, how would I know, do they get worms like dogs do? thanks, Carole

Optional Information:
Age: <1; Male; Breed: Blue Fronted Amazon

Already Tried:
forcing him and saying up and he just backs away from me and wants to attack me with his beek.

What you are doing is correct. You need to continue making him do as you want him to. This will take some time but you must be persistant. He needs to understand that he isn't in charge and you are. If he acts afraid of your hand you can use a towel to initially grab him, then put him on the floor away from his cage and make him step up on your hand then. You will have to do this several times until he decides that your hand is a better option. Always do this away from the cage so he can't retreat to it as a safe place. When he does step up make sure that he gets lots of good attention or a favorite treat so he knows that stepping up is a good thing. Taking him to a good avian vet would be a good idea. This way you know what problems he may or may not and you can have him tested for any possible parasites or viral diseases. This way you know he has a clean bill of health to start with. Good luck and be persistant, you will enjoy him that much more.
